ICT dept. Pupils introduced to concept of data capture forms i.e.
question sheet used to collect information needed for
database data entry. Examples of data capture forms
include application forms (credit card application forms,
application forms to join youth clubs), cards used by gas
meter readers and lottery ticket optical mark recognition
sheets. Concepts of valid data and data verification
explained. Data capture forms are usually used to input
data which does not require real time processing. Data
capture forms are generally used for batch processing of
information. Pupils shown examples of data capture forms.
Pupils produce data capture forms using D.T.P. / WP
software.
-
Geography dept. Actual data capture takes place when
pupils undertake geography
survey.
-
ICT dept. Pupils create database structure and
enter geography survey data into the database. Concepts
of field, key field, record and file explained.
Advantages of databases explained e.g. easy updating of
data, easy to perform complex searches, space saving.
Networked databases, particularly those networked over
wide area networks (WAN), provide the opportunity to
transfer information between separate sites. Some
examples. A house sold by an estate agency in Bewdley,
details of sale entered into database and all branches of
the estate agency are aware of the sale. This prevents
estate agents from attempting to sell properties which
have already been sold. Another example - customers sales
file is removed from filing cabinet, this file is
unavailable to others until it is returned. If the
information is stored in a database more than one person
can access the information at any point in time. It would
be much harder to arrange organ transplantation without
database link ups between hospitals
-
ICT dept. Database security problems. Use of passwords,
user log-on numbers, encryption, data masking. Importance
of backups and Data Protection Act. Print out of three
complex searches. Data sorted into ascending and
descending order. Sorted data printed out. Data
transferred to spreadsheets and graphs produced.
-
ICT dept. Transfer of databases over the Internet. We
search and sort databases sent by Haggerston school.
-
ICT dept. Write up of findings. Write ups should include:
-
Details of how to set up a database - including use
of data capture forms
-
How to search and sort a database
-
How to send database information across the Internet
-
The security implications of database usage
-
Risks involved when database materials are sent
across the Internet
-
How to produce graphs by transferring information
from a database into a spreadsheet.
