As part of their course the Geography Department also conduct a survey of  people in the town centre.

The survey will be used for a database.
Survey questionnaire to be used as a data capture form.

AGE GENDER DISTANCE TRAVELLED TRANSPORT MODE REASON FOR VISIT HOW OFTEN VISITED
20 - 40 M 5 B W E
60 + F <1 W S E
40 - 60 M 35 T,B T F

Age, in this database, is an opinion based field. Year nine pupils often have difficulty estimating ages so we will use wide categories e.g. 9 - 20, 20 - 40, 40 - 60 and over 60.

Distance travelled - in miles. Less than 1 mile = <1. Milages rounded up to nearest integer number

Transport mode codes - B bus, C car, Cy cycle, T train, U underground, M motorcycle, W walking.
Some respondents will use more than one form of transport e.g. U, B

Reason for visit codes - W work, T tourism, S shopping / services, B business visit, O other

How often visited codes- E every day, 1 once a week, 2 twice a week, 3 three times a week, M once a month, L less than once a month, F first visit

Geographical survey to take place in two stages.  Half do survey of people in town centre,  half do land use survey. Pupils then swap over to complete the half of the survey they have not yet completed

For the survey of visitors pupils work in pairs. They interview only 5 people. The results of the visitor survey are then made into one large database.
